James Beagon

Writer, Director & Tutor

James is a playwright, director and tutor based in Edinburgh. With his own company Aulos Productions, he has been producing award-winning work for both adults and children since 2014, including the award-winning shows Gobland for the Goblins! (Edinburgh Fringe 2017) and First Class (Buxton Fringe 2014). In March 2019, Aulos did a small UK tour with two other of his critically-acclaimed shows: Women of the Mourning Fields and Antigone na hEireann.

He works with a number of theatre and youth theatre organisations in the city. His teaching work with adults includes positions at Acting Out Drama School, where he currently leads the Advanced Acting class and Theatre Sans Accents, where he leads the English branch of La Troupe.

His work with children includes Strange Town since 2015, where he currently leads the Wednesday 11-14s group and several afterschool drama classes. In June 2019, his play Stolen Futures was presented at the Traverse by the Strange Town 8-18s. He also teaches and directs with East Lothian Youth Theatre at the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh, where he runs the 5-7s and 8-12s groups.

As part of Youth Theatre Arts Scotland’s Directors’ Development Programme, he directed a devised piece of musical storytelling titled Juliet and Juliet with members from both East Lothian Youth Theatre and Strange Town. This was performed at the Traverse in November 2019.

He holds a postgraduate MFA in Directing from Edinburgh Napier and is an honorary life member of the Edinburgh University Theatre Company from his time there as an undergraduate.
